New York is the king of shopping. Whatever it is that you need to buy, New York has it on offer.
One of the quintessential aspects of NYC shopping is department stores. NY department stores are world famous, and rightfully so. They have been an iconic feature of the city's shopping scene for decades and this continues to be the case in 2022 (with some notable losses, of course, which we can discuss a little later on in our blog).
There are so many different NYC department stores to choose from and each one has something special to offer every kind of customer. To make things a little bait easier for you when it comes to your own decision-making, we have decided to rank 5 of what we think are the very best department stores in the city.
Check out our favorite department stores and New York and where to find them, below.
Saks is a thriving brand of department stores in the United States. There are 45 Saks stores across the country, with their flagship store being Saks Fifth Avene in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
This iconic piece of NYC shopping has been around since 190, on 34th Street and Broadway. You might just recognize it from the Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street.
Now, the beloved department store is home to shops hosting high end fashion, home furnishings, clothes, shoes, accessories, makeup products, and everything in-between.
For a top-class New York shopping experience, Saks Fifth Avenue is for you.
Bergdorf Goodman is known for its contribution to luxury shopping in New York City. It is home to many names in high end fashion and fine jewelry, such as Prada and Gucci.
The store is situated on 754 5th Ave, New York, and has been since 1928. It has been popular in both shopping and mainstream media. You might remember scenes in Bergdorf Goodman from shows like Sex and the City and movies such as Ocean's 8.
If luxury is the aim of your game, Bergdorf Goodman is the perfect location.
If you don't know the name Macy's, where have you been all your life?
Macy's Herald Square flagship store is in Manhattan, New York, and it is a world-renowned department store. It also just happens to be the biggest Macy's store in the world.

As well as plentiful shopping opportunities, Macy's in New York is known for its extravagant holiday window displays and holiday parades. Each year a different theme is chosen for the six large windows on the Broadway side of the Herald Square store.
These windows attract visitors and tourists from all around, all eager to see the unique displays. Macy's also holds the world's largest Thanksgiving Day Parade which takes place each year and is televised.
Macy's is much more than a department store, it is a piece of American history.
Now, before we talk about this entry on our list, we need to acknowledge the obvious. Unfortunately, Barneys as we know it closed down in 2020 as another fallen victim to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The shopping giant was alive in New York from 1923 until 2020 when it went into bankruptcy.
However, not all is lost as you can still visit Barneys at Saks within Saks Fifth Avenue if you want a taste of what the giant once was.

Our last entry to the list might seem very different from the rest, and it is, but it definitely still deserves its spot on this list.
Our last famous New York department store is the Pearl River Mart on 452 Broadway in Lower Manhattan. This is an Asian mall that offers all sorts of products from Asian cultures, including fashion, food, and furniture.
A lovely hint to the cultural and ethnic diversity in NYC, this department store has become increasingly popular since its debut in 1971. New York is all about the people who make up the city and it is important to remember that those people come from all over the world.
If you want an authentic slice of the city, put Pearl River Mart on your to-visit list.
We couldn't possibly choose between any of these stores, are you kidding?
Each one has something unique and wonderful to offer a wide range of shoppers and visitors.
New York is a powerhouse of department stores, there is no denying it. If you want to go somewhere you can shop 'til you drop, you now know exactly where to go!
