The Creation of Cirque du Soleil
Baie-Saint-Paul, a little Canadian hamlet close to Québec City, is where it all began. A group of colorful folks used to wander the streets there in the early 1980s while juggling, dancing, breathing fire, and performing music while on stilts.
They were members of the street theater troupe Gilles Ste-Croix created, Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul (the Baie-Saint-Paul Stiltwalkers). The youthful artists, including Guy Laliberté, who formed Cirque du Soleil, had already captured the attention and admiration of the locals.
The group later established Le Club des talons hauts (the High Heels Club) and, in 1982, La Fête foraine de Baie-Saint-Paul, a cultural gathering where street performers from across the world gathered to share ideas and brighten up the town's streets for a few days.
In 1983 and 1984, La Fête foraine was performed again. Due to the attention Le Club des talons hauts received, Guy Laliberté, Gilles Ste-Croix, and their friends started to harbor the irrational idea of starting a Québec circus and touring the globe with the group.
For the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada in 1984, Québec City required a show that would spread the celebrations throughout the province. Guy Laliberté persuaded the organizers to accept his plan for the Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun) performance. Since then, Cirque du Soleil has kept performing!
