Our Favorite Places to Drink Wine

Whether you're looking for somewhere to grab a glass of wine before dinner or meet your friends for a fun night, here are seven amazing wine bars you'll want to check out in NYC.

Terroir Best Natural Wines

Established in 2008, Terroir began as an East Village hole in the wall before moving to Tribeca in 2010. Visitors describe it as a laid-back wine bar with exposed brick walls and community tables.

The bar takes pride in its casual approach to wine but also offers a massive list of 83 by the glass options representing different regions and styles, along with witty menu comments. The selection of bottles is also impressive. You'll find 26 varieties of riesling wine and daily happy hour specials.

Winona's Best Natural Wine Bar

On the outskirts of Williamsburg and Bed-Stuy, this relaxed wine bar is ideal for a first date – whether you want to pop in for a quick drink or stay for a casual dinner.

Although you can visit every day of the week for a mid-afternoon glass of wine or a cup of coffee at Winona's, dinner is only available from Wednesday through Saturday. The family-run restaurant serves a variety of seafood and vegetarian dishes. The wine selection spans five pages of the menu, giving customers plenty of options.

Sofia Wine Bar

This Italian-themed wine bar is located in a quiet neighborhood in Midtown East, hidden inside a townhouse. More than 25 wines are available by the glass or the bottle in this cozy setting with mottled brick walls and rustic wood decor. Sofia Wine Bar showcases wines from Piedmont, Sicily, Puglia, Alto Adige, and other regions of Italy. The mostly Italian wine list also features choices from California, Chile, and France.

This New York restaurant and wine bar offers an impressive food menu. Since Sofia Wine Bar specializes in Italian food, you'll find Pizza Margherita, burrata, bruschetta, ricotta gnocchi, cannoli, and other Italian delectables on the menu.

Kaia

You can experience authentic South African cuisine and wine at Kaia on Manhattan's Upper East Side. It's the best wine bar for someone who wants to travel to South Africa for the evening without actually leaving the city.

You'll find the most widely planted varieties of Chenin blanc and pinotage at Kaia, chardonnay, and cabernet sauvignon served by the glass, and many "pet-nat" (natural sparkling wines) sold by the bottle.

Along with the wine selections, a creative cuisine menu honoring South African flavors is available. Choose from dishes like South African hominy, a medium-rare lamb burger, and elk carpaccio.

Ruffian

Ruffian is one of the coziest bars in the East Village's historic district. This bar, which dates back to 1861, has over 250 carefully chosen wines by the bottle and a constantly-evolving list of by-the-glass selections. In addition to wine, Ruffian offers a vegetarian a la carte and tasting menu.

Artist and designer Elena Hull Cournot converted the space into a destination for people seeking a combination of atmosphere and quality vino. Ruffian proves a wine bar can be both sophisticated and cozy. This wine bar was even rated one of the best in America by Esquire Magazine.

Anfora

Anfora is a Manhattan hangout that received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2019. It has a rustic, homey environment and focuses on old world and natural wines. Expect cheese platters and charcuterie boards overflowing with well-paired little bites and warm, welcoming service. For after-work snacks or a wine-and-cheese night that doubles as a dinner out, visit Anfora. Although this hotspot may be all about the wine, the food is delicious too.

June

June contributed to Brooklynites becoming aware of natural wine when it first debuted in 2015. Even now, unique bottles add to the appeal of the Midnight in Paris atmosphere of the 1920s. June is a good wine bar for enjoying a French wine or opting for one of the delicious dessert wines. Although their extensive and varied wine list, many reasonably priced selections make it the perfect place for a date night. Choose wines by the glass, half glasses, or bottles.
