An installation depicting the passengers' perspective on the terrible incident that has caught the public's attention for a century is being displayed as part of the centennial celebrations at the New York Historical Society Museum & Library on the Upper West Side.
The exhibit include s a handwritten narrative of the sinking by first-class passenger Washington Dodge who was a witness.
Dodge, his wife, and their son managed to escape on lifeboats as 1,514 other people perished on April 15, 1912.
A bronze medal awarded to the captain of the Carpathia, the vessel that rescued 710 passengers from the Titanic's few lifeboats, is also on display in the New York Historical Society's Titanic exhibit, as is a Marié miniature of Mrs. John Borland Thayer, who survived the catastrophe along with her son.
While you're there, have a look at the Historical Society's brand-new Keith Haring exhibit, which pays homage to the well-known New York graffiti artist famous for his animated subway paintings (the Brooklyn Museum is also presently featuring a sizable collection of Haring's early work).
Or visit one of the Historical Society's ongoing exhibits, which feature works of art and artifacts from four centuries, including American masterpieces and amazing artifacts like the sole surviving "draft wheel" from the Civil War, which was used to select eligible men for service and caused a riot in New York City that claimed 100 lives.

In addition to historical artifacts and documents from the Titanic and its passengers, "Myth and Memory" also includes interactive elements that demonstrate how the general public remembers and interprets the horrible event.
Production memorabilia from several films about the Titanic are also on display, including the 1953 movie "Titanic," which starred Barbara Stanwyck, and the most recent depiction of the tragedy, a new four-part ABC miniseries penned by Julian Fellowes (Downtown Abbey).
Of course, the 1997 Academy Award-winning picture directed by James Cameron and starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is the most well-known Titanic movie; the new Titanic 3D was only recently re-released.
