Wicked

"The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz… with Unprecedented Success!"

Every once in a great while a musical comes along that sells out consistently, has audiences clamoring for more and is the hot ticket all of New York City is talking about. This sort of event is happening right now on Broadway. And it’s a show called Wicked. This enormously appealing musical takes a story we all know and love – the Wizard of Oz – and looks at it from a fresh perspective. Sure, we all knew Glinda was good and the Wicked Witch of the West was mean. But how did they get that way? What happened beforehand? And would you believe they were once good friends?

Clearly, a whole lot happened before Dorothy dropped in. A true mega-hit, Wicked features a score by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Godspell), a book by Winnie Holzman (“My So-Called Life,” “thirtysomething”) and direction by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Take Me Out, Assassins, Glengarry Glenn Ross). Have you been to Oz yet? Well, why not? Get your tickets and get Wicked today!

One thing’s for sure: Wicked has a lot going for it. It’s got a female-empowering story of women bonding together in ways you wouldn’t imagine. So teenage girls love it, their moms adore it and their dads tag along, finding themselves thoroughly entertained and endlessly surprised. It’s got an amazing score by Stephen Schwartz, with such instant classics as “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.” It’s got a massive production, with a large cast and eye-popping special effects (you won’t believe how one of the witches flies at the end of the first act). And it’s got cleverness all over the stage, with the characters speaking in their own invented language that is totally hilarious. Is there a happy ending? We won’t tell you that. But we will say this is one musical the whole family will enjoy.
