5 Shows for Families

If you’re looking for big musicals the whole family will eat right up, you’re in luck. There are lots of options on Broadway right now.

For the show that gets two snaps up from fans young and old alike, head to The Addams Family. Parents will recognize the characters from the TV series. Kids have probably seen the movies. Here’s the thing (get it, the thing): the show is actually based on the original New Yorker cartoons by the legendary Charles Addams, but with a whole new story about everyone’s favorite creepy clan having to meet the family of dear Wednesday’s new boyfriend. What’s not to love?

For more emotional fare, try Billy Elliot. This international mega-smash from London is based on the hugely successful movie. It’s the story of one boy’s dream to become a ballet dancer and take the big leap to a new stage in life. The only problem is, he lives in a tiny mining village in rural England, and he’s supposed to be focused on sports like boxing. Against all odds, the whole town comes together to support him, in one of Broadway’s most powerful stories. The sensational score by Elton John will have you humming (and maybe even doing a few ballet turns of your own) all the way home.

If it’s dazzling theatrical stagecraft you want, the grand champion is The Lion King. Based on the classic Disney movie and adapted for the stage by the award-winning Julie Taymor, The Lion King has it all: great songs (by Elton John and Tim Rice), unbelievable theatrical magic and a story everyone knows by heart. It’s taken the world by storm, but Broadway is the only place to see the original sensation.

Another Disney fave is Mary Poppins, currently wowing audiences at the gorgeously renovated New Amsterdam Theatre. Based on the much-loved Disney film and featuring the songs and story everyone adores, this high-flying show takes the story kids and parents know well to a whole new level. The impressive set takes an entire London house and hoists it up and down the stage. And then Mary herself flies over the audience in one of Broadway’s most gasp-inducing effects. It’s a real winner.

Finally, there’s Wicked. This is one show that’s got something for everyone in the family. For young girls, there’s an empowering story of two very different women bonding. For boys, there are cool stage tricks and some pretty awesome adventures. And for parents, there’s a truly amazing message about embracing difference and coming to know your enemies in a very different light. The show’s a runaway hit and a worldwide sensation, and it’s clear why: It satisfies the whole family.
