It’s the height of wedding season in NYC, but we doubt you’ll ever see a bride posing by the pond in Central Park wearing designer Susan Brennan’s latest wedding dress.
Because if the bride were to fall in, she’d find herself soaking up more than just a few stares; the wedding dress is made out of 10 jumbo rolls of Charmin toilet paper! And Brennan, an aspiring designer from Lake Orchard, Michigan, beat more than 700 entries to once again win the Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! in Times Square.
Based on the popular bridal shower game in which the bride’s friends must craft her a new dress using only toilet paper, the contest hosted by Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com requires participants to construct their wedding dresses from nothing more than Charmin, tape, glue and/or a needle and thread. Brennan, who also won the contest last year, took it one step further, assembling her bride-to-be accessories as well, including a clutch purse, brooch, headband and bracelet. The entire look took her more than 100 hours to complete.
“The quality of talent that presents itself each year always amazes us,” says Susan Bain, one of the founders of Cheap Chic Weddings, a money-saving website for brides-to-be that has hosted the contest eight years in a row. “This year’s entries included several dresses that had intricate details like faux embroidery, ruffles, pleats and even lace effects.”
Brennan’s dress features a quilted bodice with a cut-out in the back, and a skirt overlaid with intricate flowers. It’s elegant yet sexy — and until you get close enough to touch the dress, you can hardly tell it’s made from toilet paper. (Just don’t spill anything on it!)
Unbelievable? That’s why judging for the annual contest took place at Ripley’s in Times Square — New York City’s only outpost of the world famous odditorium that features other such unlikely manmade and natural relics.
Brennan took home the top prize of $2,012, while runner-up Katrina Chalifoux received a check for $1,000. Jennifer Henry won $500 for her third-place creation. You can see all of their dresses at www.cheap-chic-weddings.com.
