New York Historical Society Museum & Library

"Founded in 1804, this is New York’s first museum in it’s renovated landmark building."

With $65 million in renovations at New York Historical Society Museum, you can relive America’s history in style!  Between the new multi-media additions, the revolutionary exhibits, multi-sensory films, and a top notch Italian restaurant, your day will be filled exploring all of the breath-taking attractions.   If you have little ones, they will fall in love with the DiMenna Children’s History Museum featuring interactive exhibits and games that tell the story of American history to spark the interest and imagination of children.  Add a visit to the New York Historical Society Museum to your New York vacation and learn more about our nation’s cherished history.
  • Brand new multi-media installation inside of the Great Wall features a running slideshow of famous photographs, interactive stations, cases of historic artifacts, and a 1,500 picture display from 9/11.
  • The exciting exhibit Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn boldly links the French, American and Haitian revolutions.
  • Making American Taste exhibits some of the 19th Century paintings and sculptures that comprise the personal collection of the members of the New York Historical Society.
  • The pristinely decorated Italian restaurant on site, Caffe Storico, features gourmet Italian fare that was recently named “the best-curated cache of thoughtful, culturally significant gifts” by The Village Voice.
  • The DiMenna Children’s History Museum is playful area where children learn through interaction and games.  For children ages 8-13, this highly decorated and innovative exhibition gives children incentive to learn more about American history.
  • The New York Historical Museum is a great place for kids. Children under 7 years old are free!  They’ll definitely enjoy the DiMenna Children’s Museum and are welcome to explore the rest of the museum as well!
  • Photography (no flash or tripods) is allowed in the fourth-floor Luce Center and in the DiMenna Children’s History Museum.  In all other areas of the museum, photography is prohibited.
  • Hearing and visual impairments don’t stop guests from enjoying the museum.  There is a free audio tour for Revolution! And most exhibits, including all in the DiMenna Children’s Museum, have audio and visuals.
  • Strollers are welcomed in The New York Historical Galleries as well as the DiMenna Children’s Museum.  Collapsible strollers may be left at the coat check.
  • There is a wheelchair entrance at 2 West 77th Street, and Wheelchairs are accessible throughout the museum.  Should you require a wheelchair rental, they are available to visitors for free, but make sure you reserve yours in advance.
  • Street parking near the Museum is tough to find so we recommend the parking garages that are located on 77th, 76th, and 75th Street.
