The Cloisters Museum

"The beautiful tapestries on display"

Discover the beauty of The Cloisters museum and gardens, located high atop a hill in northern Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park—only 30 minutes by subway from midtown—devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe.

Enjoy unparalleled views of the Hudson River, stroll through enchanting gardens, and see masterpieces of medieval sculpture, stained glass, tapestries, and more.

Assembled from architectural elements, both domestic and religious, that date from the 12th through the 15th century, the building and its cloistered gardens are treasures in themselves, effectively part of the collection housed there. The Cloisters' collection comprises approximately 3,000 works of art from medieval Europe, dating from about the ninth to the 16th century.

The Cloisters offers gallery talks and other programs for adults at noon and 2:00 p.m. every Saturday and on the first Sunday of each month, year-round. These talks are free with Museum admission. In addition, the Museum offers family programs, talks with curators and conservators, and concerts and performances in the twelfth-century Fuentidueña Chapel. Audio guides also are available in English, French, German, and Spanish.

Open from April through October, The Trie Café offers sandwiches, snacks, dessert, cold beverages, and coffee, served outdoors in the French medieval Trie Cloister.

  • During your stroll though the museum you’ll see amazing works that include the Unicorn tapestries, sculpture, stained glass and precious metal work.
  • From April through October, assorted sandwiches, snacks, dessert, cold beverages, and coffee are served outdoors in the French medieval Trie Cloister.
  • Explore beautifully re-created plant, flower, and herb gardens of the Middle Ages.
  • The museum offers highlights tours, talks with curators and conservators, family workshops, and special events for guests of all ages.
  • The West Terrace delivers amazing views of the Hudson River!
  • The Cloisters is very accessible by subway, bus, or car.
  • Nearby subway stop in the city to get up to The Cloisters is located at 190th Street.

The Cloisters welcomes all visitors and offers events and programs to accommodate all audiences on a regular basis.
