Museum of the City of New York

"A Compelling Collection of Photographs and Artifacts that Document Hundreds of Years of New York City Culture!"

What is it about New York that would entice more than 8 million people want to cram themselves into the five boroughs that make up this bustling city? From commerce and culture, to sports and style, New York City has always been front and center on the world stage. Learn about the culture of this fascinating city  - both today and when the city was little more than a fur trading post - at the Museum of the City of New York.

  • A comprehensive collection of photographs, including work by Jacob Riis, a pioneer in flash photography who documented the slums and crime-ridden corners of New York during the late 1800s, as well as many Depression-era Federal Art Project photographs.
  • Several furnished rooms recreated from the home of New York oil magnate and famed philanthropist John D. Rockefeller.
  • The 22-minute multmedia experience Timescapes traces the growth of New York City from a settlement of a few hundred Europeans, Africans and Native Americans to the city it is today. The film features animated maps and archival photographs, prints, and paintings from the Museum's collections.
  • An extensive collection of Broadway memorabilia and prized theatre artifacts like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson's tap shoes.
Past exhibitions have included an in-depth photographic look at the history of professional baseball in New York City, including clips of Ed Sullivan interviewing Mickey Mantle and Phil Rizzuto, and a retrospective on the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem.
  • Check the Museum of the City of New York's online calendar so you can plan your visit around the special event that interests you.
  • The museum offers an ever-changing array of lectures, film screenings, and family workshops.
  • Most special events are free with admission. Free gallery tours lead by curators offer even more insight into the history and culture of this amazing city.
  • All visitors must have their bags screened by security and will need to check backpacks of any size, shopping bags, and all bags larger than 11 by 17 by 6 inches (28 by 43 by 15 centimeters).
  • Lockers are available, but visitors may not check laptops, cameras, luggage, or valuables of any size.
