The Metropolitan Museum of Art

"An Amazing Collection of Art From Around the World and Through the Ages!"

You could spend a week at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and still have something left to see. Spanning five city blocks on the east side of Central Park, the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s largest art museums. Its massive collection spans 5,000 years of art — from an ancient Egyptian temple to modern American Pop Art.

  • The impressive display of authentically armored knights atop equally armored horses in the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Arms and Armor Court.
  • The massive collection of marble, bronze and terra cotta statues in the European Sculpture Court may inspire you to join the students you see sketching the handsome human forms on display.
  • The ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur.
  • The Met’s collection of Modern art highlights America’s most notable artists of the last century.
  • The view of Central Park from the Rooftop Garden Cafe and Martini Bar can’t be beat. Enjoying it with a martini in hand is even better. Open May through late fall, weather permitting: Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Martini Bar: 5:30 to 8 p.m.; Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • With so much to see, it’s easy to find yourself overwhelmed at the Met. Or worse — after wandering without direction through the massive halls, you may miss out on the pieces you really wanted to see. So it’s a good idea to grab a map before you enter and plot out your visit. If you’re determined to see it all, plan to take a break and eat lunch in one of the Met’s five dining options.
  • Admission fee includes a same-day visit to the Cloisters Museum, home to the Met’s collection of medieval European art. Overlooking the Hudson River in Upper Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, the Cloisters and its surrounding gardens offer a tranquil reprieve from the busy city. The building incorporates elements from five medieval French cloisters, while the beautifully landscaped gardens showcase an everchanging array of flowers. Garden tours are free with admission.
  • The Met provides wheelchairs free of charge, and appointments can be made in advance for a volunteer guide to escort wheelchair users through the museum.
  • For a small fee, visitors can rent one of the Met’s audio guide players, which has approximately 100 hours of audio commentary about the works of art in the permanent collection and select special exhibitions.
  • Food and drinks may not be brought into the museum. Only water in plastic bottles is permitted.
  • While you’re allowed to take photos in most areas of the Met, using a flash is not permitted. Video cameras are not allowed.
  • Sketching is permitted, but only with pencils.
  • Leave the luggage at home or in your hotel. It’s not permitted in the galleries and cannot be left at the coat check.
  • The Met is wheelchair accessible and strollers are permitted in most areas. (Enter at the street-level entrance at Fifth Avenue and 81st Street or the Museum Parking Garage at Fifth Avenue and 80th Street).
