"The 2nd Largest Museum in New York City"
The Brooklyn Museum contains around 1.5 million works of art over the massive Beaux-Arts building, which is one of the oldest and largest museum structures in the country. It is home to an impressive permanent collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. They have several mummies mixed with canopic jars which were used to store the mummy’s vital organs and a 25-foot long scroll of the Book of the Dead that is 3,000 years old. The museum, also, carries an American art collection dating back to colonial times for almost 300 years of American art and inspiration.Their current collection varies from contemporary, interactive, and period pieces.
• The extensive group of art and mummies from ancient Egypt: They have details on techniques of mummification and the famous female figurine, Bird Lady, which is from the earliest part of Egyptian history before they had writing, about 5,500 years old.
• With pieces of American art from circa 1720 to 1945, get a great view of American history through eight themed galleries. From the colony days to a Modern Life theme, portraits like Gilbert Stewart’s recognizable George Washington full body painting and scenes like The Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks highlight the journey. The exhibition is filled with paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and furniture featuring artist like Georgia O’Keeffe and Winslow Homer.
• The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago – An example of 1970s feminist art, a triangular table with a table setting for 39 places. The place settings are meant to honor important women from the past and within the triangle on tiles the names of 999 more women.
• The Museum has its own renovated subway station and it is only a 30-min ride from midtown Manhattan.
• There are free guided tours that meet in the Rubin Lobby (1st floor.)
• Located in Brooklyn’s cultural hub, other visiting sites nearby include the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park and Zoo, and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
